As of January 1, 2011, 31 miles Smith River from Philpott Dam downstream to Mitchell Bridge will fall under new regulations in an attempt to protect the larger breeding size brown trout.
All brown
trout between 10" and 24" MUST be released unharmed back into the river.
Only one brown trout OVER 24" may be in possession.
The regulations for rainbow and brook trout have not changed. Just like always the minimum size is 7" and the limit is six fish per day in aggregate.
In addition, the single hook, artificial lure special regulation for a small stretch of waters in northern Bassett has been removed. Trout may be taken with any type of tackle now.

The Roanoke Times and the Martinsville Bulletin have also covered these regulations with very informative articles.
