Smith River Fishing and cookout May 31
The Smith river fishing and cookout went off this past weekend with around 20 people fishing and 30 came to the cookout. The weather was great and the food was very good. Thanks to all of you who helped with the cookout and the fishing on the river. Thanks to Scott Smith from VDGIF who came and spoke about the health of the river. We had a drawing for a lot of gifts and a rod and reel from orvis. Thanks to; Ovis, Sportsmans Wharehouse, Bucks Bass and More, Dicks Sporting Goods, Al Kittredge, and Harry Murrays fly Shop for donating items for the raffle. We spent around $100 on groceries and made $250 on the raffle so that gave us a profit of $150 that went into SRTU budget. Hopefully next year we will have more to come. We will start workimg on it next year.
March 6th meeting
The March 6 meeting was just held at Ranias in Martinsville. There was a presentation given by Wayne Kirkpatrick and Brian Williams. The presentation was on the TIC (Trout in the Classroom). It was an excellent presentation and was very informative. Thanks to Wayne, Brian and David Jones again for their work with the TIC. Along with the TIC presentation Wayne brought a tub of bugs from the Mayo River which had everything from helgramites to mayfly nymphs, this was a great learning tool for all those fisherman.
After the presentation the normal order of business was brought up. Planning for the Environmental Education Expo by The Friends of Philpott on April 12. Check in the Calendar for more info. We need members to come and help run the table for the SRTU. We need to set up by noonfor the evnt to start at 1:00.
Also brought up at the meeting was the next upcoming SRTU event the Fish with a Member and Cookout. We still need to get some chairs tables and a large tent in case of rain. If anyone has any of these please email B.J. Walker with the details. We are going to buy the food from the Budget but members are asked to bring a covered dish. We will be having a raffle for gifts, we need to get donations from area vendors to give out at the cookout.
Other order of business was to set up a day to clean the river in the summer some time. We are going to try and figure out a day at the next meeting.
The last order of the night was voting on using money from the budget of up to $75 to build and run a web site which was approved.
New web site
I wanted to let everyone know the details of the new web site. We are currently using Godaddy.com for our host, we used their web builder to design the site. As of right now we went with the economy plan wich cost us $47.95 for the year. Myself B.J. Walker,Al Kittredge, and Brian Williams will be moderating the site, i also spoke with Jerry Decker who said he would help run the site. Right now any news that needs to be posted can be sent to B.J. Walker or Al Kittredge. If their is anyone who knows how to build a web site we can build one better and just pay for the hosting of the site.
